For the purposes of traveling around VA/MD/DC, it's harder to be in a more centralized spot to explore from! Centrally located in Virginia, and sited on multiple major transit routes, you can quickly access an incredible amount of stuff within a relatively easy drive. King's Crossing is 5 minutes off of Rt 3, just west of town, enabling quick access to get exploring!
Here are some things that I would recommend checking out, sorted by driving time from King's Crossing:
- Downtown Fredericksburg - 15 min
This is the main drag in downtown Fredericksburg. The old town has been around since 1728, and is adorable! Hometown of George Washington. William street and Caroline Street are the are the main streets to start your exploration!
- Central Park - 15 min
If you enjoy shopping at brand name stores and eating at brand name restaurants, chances are what you're looking for is right here. One of the largest shopping centers on the east coast. If you've driven on I-95 past Fredericksburg, you've probably seen the sign!
- Fredericksburg Farmer's Market - 15 min - SATURDAY MORNINGS
Open on Saturday mornings, this is a delightful little market located at Hurkamp Park downtown that has fresh flowers, bread, honey and assorted items. On a nice day, it's a lovely time!
- Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania Military Park - 5-30min
The Civil War left an extraordinary mark on this area. The area changed hands at least 7 times during the fighting between north and south. King's Crossing actually has a civil war trench still visible on the property, as we are situated between old town and the battles that occurred during the Chancellorsville campaign.
There are 4 main areas to explore (Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Courthouse). If the battlefields are part of your visit, please check out the following link to plan your visit!

- Motts Run Reservation Recreation Area - 10 min
Fancy some hiking or a quick canoe ride? This little park sits on a reservoir, and a nice little getaway near the property.
- Historic Kenmore - 15 min
Plantation house and garden in downtown Fredericksburg, famous for being the home of George Washington's sister. There are pretty gardens around the house that are free to the public.
- George Washington's Ferry Farm - 20 min
The boyhood home of George Washington (recently recreated). This is the place where George Washington grew up and supposedly chopped down that famous cherry tree.
- Washington DC - 1 hour
Have you heard of it? It's only the center of power for the USA. Loaded with FREE incredible museums and monuments, and awesome food and sights. I should probably have a guidebook just for this one, TBD!
- Richmond - 1 hour
State Capital of Virginia, and has been a hipster haven for the past 1o years. Great food, cool sights, and a bigger city vibe.
- James Madison's Montpelier - 1 hour
Check out President James Madison's historic home, situated between King's Crossing and Charlottesville.
- George Washington's Mount Vernon - 1 hour
Check out the most famous home of George Washington. It is definitely one of the most popular stately homes in the DC area!
- Shenandoah National Park - 1 hour
This park is home to the world famous Skyline Drive. If you head west on rt 3, you'll get to one of the entrances in an hour (head towards Sperryville, which is a cute little town at the foot of the mountains).
- Charlottesville - 1.5 hour
Home to both Jefferson and UVA, this is a lovely town nestled at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains
- Thomas Jefferson's Monticello - 1.5 hour
The famous home of Thomas Jefferson is situated on top of a small mountain overlooking the city of Charlottesville.
- Historic Williamsburg - 1.75 hour
If you were a younger George Washington, the happening place to "be seen" was Williamsburg. Think of it as an historic theme park, designed to immerse you into what it would have been like in the 1700's. A trip in itself!
